Conflicting-handling
One of the conflict-handling style is competing style. The person that used this method is Robert. Robert only wants to get the compensation for the hard work and long hours his team has put in over the last few years. He also insisted on his decision by rejecting Kay offer an even went as far as threaten Kay that he will involved the union to get his request. Competing style is used to ensure one part maximise its results at the expense of the party’s needs. This is a win-lose situation where one party get what he/she wants and other in the losing end. Kay in this situation is unable use the funds to expand and diversify the company.
Bargaining Approach
Robert uses a distributive bargaining approach to negotiate his needs. His intention has always been one sided which is to get the compensation of 8% raise for his work unit. He never back down from it and even choose to threaten Kay in order to what he wants. Distributing approach is similar to competing negotiations where one of the party wins and the other lose. Robert’s way of negotiation is very aggressive. This method often causes the other half to be very unwilling to follow and lose.
Interpersonal communication
The assertiveness is contributing to the poor working environment. Robert, being non-assertive, is the main reason that contributes to the poor working environment. The way that Robert requested was very demanding and never thought of any other benefits under than himself and his team. It is also very on side of the argument that he can accept. He just wants to win the argument by threatening to get the union involve which will cause a huge problem for Kay. Threatening is the worst method of negotiation which makes any decision very unpleasant. Being Therefore, Robert is non-assertive.
Hall’s context model
Using Hall’s context model to describe Robert, he is more of a low-context culture as he wants the compensation for the hard work and long hours that his team has put in. He denied any other delay of this decision and wanted the monetary increase as soon as possible. This shows monochronic where things happen one at a time and in sequence. If he wants the increment in pay, he has to get it before any other talks about other new projects. However he does contains high-context culture as he is doing it for his team. This means that he care for his team very much till he use his union member authority to threaten Kay.
