Negotiation

Conflicting-handling

One of the conflict-handling style is competing style. The person that used this method is Robert. Robert only wants to get the compensation for the hard work and long hours his team has put in over the last few years. He also insisted on his decision by rejecting Kay offer an even went as far as threaten Kay that he will involved the union to get his request. Competing style is used to ensure one part maximise its results at the expense of the party’s needs. This is a win-lose situation where one party get what he/she wants and other in the losing end. Kay in this situation is unable use the funds to expand and diversify the company.

Bargaining Approach

Robert uses a distributive bargaining approach to negotiate his needs. His intention has always been one sided which is to get the compensation of 8% raise for his work unit. He never back down from it and even choose to threaten Kay in order to what he wants. Distributing approach is similar to competing negotiations where one of the party wins and the other lose. Robert’s way of negotiation is very aggressive. This method often causes the other half to be very unwilling to follow and lose.

Interpersonal communication

The assertiveness is contributing to the poor working environment. Robert, being non-assertive, is the main reason that contributes to the poor working environment. The way that Robert requested was very demanding and never thought of any other benefits under than himself and his team. It is also very on side of the argument that he can accept. He just wants to win the argument by threatening to get the union involve which will cause a huge problem for Kay. Threatening is the worst method of negotiation which makes any decision very unpleasant. Being Therefore, Robert is non-assertive.

Hall’s context model

Using Hall’s context model to describe Robert, he is more of a low-context culture as he wants the compensation for the hard work and long hours that his team has put in. He denied any other delay of this decision and wanted the monetary increase as soon as possible. This shows monochronic where things happen one at a time and in sequence. If he wants the increment in pay, he has to get it before any other talks about other new projects. However he does contains high-context culture as he is doing it for his team. This means that he care for his team very much till he use his union member authority to threaten Kay.

Stereotypes

Introduction

There are many different types of people. There are people with different gender, religion, race and many more. These characteristics define who they are as a person. Assuming that a person has the characteristics of a kind does not mean that they have the same traits as their kind. This is called stereotyping Stereotyping can be seen everywhere, in school, in the public, and even at home. These act cause a lot of miscommunication in life and many people are offended because of it. Stereotyping can also lead to a bigger problem which is discrimination. Therefore, it is important not to stereotype anyone and judge every single person based on their actions and not physical characteristics.

Personal Experience

During the first year in polytechnic, I remembered there was a guy with a huge tattoo at the back of his neck. Many people were afraid of him and rumour of him being a gangster started to spread like wildfire for the past few days. Everyone in class and lecture avoided him as much as possible. I also tried to avoid him as he was very muscular too.

Finally one day, our assignment required pair work and I got chosen randomly to work with him. At first, I was thinking “Damn, why is it me?”. I was afraid but after gathering up courage and out of respect, I greeted him and he kindly greeted me back. I was shocked as I had never heard his voice before. After working with him, I realized that he was actually smart and kind. He also shared with me his interest in tattoo art but many people thought that he was a gangster. That was when I realized that I was also one of those people that stereotyped him based to his tattoo. I apologized to him about stereotyping him. He did not get mad and laugh instead. He was used to it and even till now, we are friends.

Implication

This lesson taught me about stereotyping a person and also do not always believe to rumours. If you want to know whether a person is actually what people say, you have to know him/her personally in order to get the truth. Do not judge a book by its color.

Conclusion

Stereotyping can cause a lot of miscommunication and problems. Even though it is hard not to stereotype someone accidentally, we have to try our best not to do it. Stereotyping often leads to discrimination and results in conflict. Communication will ease or worsen the situation very quickly. We must be very mindful of our words.

Johari Window

Based on public eye

After analysing myself with the public using Johari Window, it shows that only a few traits are identified. It is not a surprise as the public view is showing the first impression. Some traits can be mistaken through facial reactions, behaviour, posture, appearance and many more. Also, different gender may look at different traits differently. For example, a male person may notice more of the interaction and a female may notice more on the appearance first. All of this will change the perception of other people on me. Some of the traits are hard to be determine in such a short period of time, unless specifically discussing the topic. However, based on what others perceive me as, I am quite happy with the result. Even though some of these traits are the total opposite, it good to have them in the public eye. People do not like to be judge by others, therefore making some traits not to be chosen in order to not offend them. Therefore the public eye may not be accurate.

Based on closed friend

Closed friend knows more about me as there are more interactions between one another. Many of the traits that I identified are mostly similar with a few exception. Everything is based on perception. Some may think an act of giving is contributing to the society, the others may think an act of giving is giving gifts for people you are closed with. As mention above, Everyone has different perception and opinion. Therefore I am not surprised that the public area has many similar traits and some different opinions. This shows that my closed do know me well. They are also able to identify some of the positive traits that I never knew I have. It is a good sign for me as it gives me insight of what I am and what I could be. However, there may be misunderstanding that may give wrong impression. This analysis helps to identify those traits and ask my friend what makes him/her thinks that way. It will prevent miscommunication and allow people to identify myself more.

In conclusion

Doing the Johari Window realize how much people that are around actually know me. In team work, knowing each others’ characteristic is important so that we are able to identify our strength and weakness. Traits such as confident, helpful are important as it benefit teamwork and presentation. For the unknown areas, I may not have these traits but it is possible that I have never encounter that thinks of me that way.

Shannon and Weaver’s (1954) Model Discussion

Introduction

Shannon and Weaver’s model was created by Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren Weaver. Basically, sender sends a message to a channel through a encoder and will be transmitted to the decoder of the receiver end. The receiver will get the decoded message. However, in the process of delivery noise and interruption will affect how the message be decoded. This is the basic form of communication. Since it was created in 1954, society and technology has change the how communication is being transmitted. Many other factors affect how message is being decoded or understood. In this blog post, we will discover other factors that affects the message being transmitted.

Technology change

Technology has change the world since 1954. The Shannon and Weaver’s model is based on a telephone communication. However, technology today allows people to text, face-cam, send memes, and many more. These method of communication allow people to send and receive the message without interruption. Application such as Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter and social media website allow people to share and communicate with ease. People will receive word-for-word what people is trying to send out, making it easily understandable. These application reduces the noise aspect of communication on the daily basis and allow people from all around the world to communicate.

Emotional factors

Emotions place a huge factor in communication. Emotions can determine whether the information that is being sent or received is correct or wrong. If a person is telling a joke to an angry friend to calm him down, the angry friend might misunderstood the intention and invoke him more. Another example, a depressed person will always pretend that he is happy in order to hide his desperation for help in his/her heart, making it not noticeable to public when sending a message across. There are so many stars that gave up their life in this couple of years but we never knew that they are going through such pain in their life. What we see from the outside is sometimes not what they feel in the inside. For example, K-pop star Kim Jong-hyun from boy group SHINee. He did not show any sign of depression to his fans at all till his death when he wrote a suicide note. This shows how communication can even affect life and death.

Language Barrier/Culture

Language barrier may not be a big issue in communication now due to the fact that you can just translate a huge paragraph with just a click of a button. However, society or cultural understanding may differ for different countries. For example, the word ‘Fart’ in English is expelling intestinal gas. However in Polish, it means good luck and in Swedish, it means speed. We are able to see how same words have different meaning in different countries. In Singapore, we like to end with the sentence with ‘lah’, ‘loh’, ‘meh’ and many more. These words change the message that we are trying to communicate. These words, basically Singlish (Singapore English) add emotions to our message without us showing out in real life and people in other countries may not understand them. Therefore, this shows how culture and language barrier can affect communication.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many factors that affect communication and change the Shannon and Weaver’s (1954) model. This model will keep adding and changing as life continues. The best model that is recommended now is Dwyer’s model as it consists of most factors that are affecting communication now. It may not be the perfect model but it is the best communication model currently.
